The Project
South Africa has a situation that has seen a number of child headed households, with children as young as 8, having had a parent or both parents pass away, as a result of HIV/AIDS and Covid. Once a parent passes on, which in most cases, is the mom, the dad, will desert the kids, and leave them in the care of a grandparent, who are in their 60s or 70s and have little or no income. In situations where both parents pass away, with no grandparent available, these kids are simply left to raise themselves, and in most cases are families of between 4 to 5 kids, with the eldest of the kids, bearing the brunt of the responsibility.
Communities around these kids, are usually in remote rural areas, and hundreds of kilometers from any economic hub, and therefore have very little or no resources to assist in raising these kids. As a result of this above scenario and many more intricate examples, we will find these kids, tasked with these monumental responsibilities, either taking their own lives, or abandoning their siblings, and run into a life of crime, which inevitably leads to human trafficking of the smaller siblings left behind, and is often facilitated by opportunistic adults within the very communities in which the kids are left abandoned.
Services We Provide
These are some of the key services provided for our Children
Meals
Focus is on a balanced nutritional and wholesome diet requirement, comprising of breakfast. Lunch & supper, with snacks, 7 days a week
Clothing
Due to the kids being permanent placements without any external support infrastructure, it is paramount to ensure that the kids are clothed and uniformed for school appropriately, and with dignity.
Recreation
Robust social cohesion and integration is encouraged through sports and activities. These would also include giving the kids a semblance of normal child activities, like going out to the mall & movies, once a month, as well as quarterly excursions.
Education
We are in partnerships with schools and government social departments, holding ongoing discussions for waivering of majority of the annual costs, however, we have found that the npo would have to carry the minimum costs prescribed by sgbs.
Health Care
At present the npo has to create a budget for medi-care expenses, however, we are engaging corporate medical schemes to enter into partnership on a medical aid scheme for the kids.
Home Care/ Spiritual & Moral Guidance
This forms the foundational principles of roc kid`s haven, with minimal costs incurred due to volunteer partnerships
